Lunchtime Learning Series: Subaward Series: Behind the Single Audit

The Region VI Education and Professional Development Committee (EPDC) is proud to announce our series on Subaward Concepts, Requirements, and Management Series, this is the third and final session in the series this year focusing on subaward management. The series is not meant to be an in-depth training, but an opportunity for colleagues to present and discuss tips, tricks and tools that have worked (or not worked). This third session in the series is titled “The Single Audit,” which is meant to provide attendees with the importance and usefulness of the single audit related to subrecipients; as well as detail/explain the history of the single audit and provide insights on the information that can be gathered for subrecipient risk assessment.

Robert Prentiss got his start in research administration at the University of Texas at Austin, where he worked in a variety of post-award financial roles. He now works on subrecipient monitoring in the Office of Sponsored Projects at Yale University. Since 2014, he has volunteered with the Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP), a cooperative initiative among federal agencies and research organizations designed to reduce the administrative burden associated with research grants and contracts. He is now co-chair of the FDP’s Expanded Clearinghouse Subcommittee.
Joshua Kerber is the Post Award Manager for Finance in the Sponsored Projects Services office at the University of Oregon, where he has been since 2011.

The Region VI Education and Professional Development Committee (EPDC) is proud to announce our Lunchtime Learning Series; a short 45-minute session with a focus on a specific topic. This is the second in a three part series and is not meant to be an in-depth training, but an opportunity for colleagues to present and discuss tips, tricks and tools that have worked (or not worked). This month’s focus is on the revisions to 2 CFR 200 that will impact subawards and subrecipient monitoring. The session goals are to provide guidance for attendees to understand the implementation timelines for each update and discuss best practices, ideas, and questions from the participants.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the capacity to understand, manage, and utilize emotions effectively in yourself and others. It involves self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and relationship management. These skills are crucial for effective communication, establishing healthy relationships, and achieving success in both personal and professional domains. EI empowers individuals to navigate social complexities, lead with empathy, and enhance overall well-being.
We invite you to join us for a compelling presentation on Emotional Intelligence (EI), where we will delve into the key skills required for recognizing, understanding, managing, and influencing emotions both in yourself and others. The Region VI Education and Professional Development Committee (EPDC) is proud to announce our next lunchtime learning, informational session on how to obtain managerial buy in for conference attendance. We have NCURA’s Annual Meeting in August as well as the Region VI/VI meeting in September in Albuquerque, NM. Our speakers will provide their experiences and recommendations on what is necessary when requesting permission and funds to attend a professional development conference.

This month’s focus is on Proposal Review & Submission where we can have an informal conversation with colleagues regarding the potential pitfalls of proposal submission and review from our seasoned research administrators.
Join us Wednesday, August 23 for our Lunchtime Learning Series: Proposal Review & Submission with Jeff Derr, providing a departmental perspective, and Jenna Isakson, with the central office perspective.
Jeff and Jenna will cover issues related to institutional proposal deadlines, communication, and central value-add among other items.

We have numerous individuals entering research administration for the first time, the early-research administrator (1-3 years) and some who are coming back to the field after a hiatus. This course is designed to provide a foundation in pre-award basics for the new, early and returning research administrators. We intend for registrants to leave the webinar with a strong pre-award foundation, resources to support their work, professional development, and an introduction to a network for support in the field.

Join us for a discussion on Breaking Down Cultural Norms within the Academic Setting: Strategies for Creating a Safe Space for Honest and Open Dialogue. We endeavor to expand on our mission and vision to provide a diverse and equitable workplace and social environment through discussion and education with a free discussion group to talk about issues relating to the academic setting and encourage safe, open environments to foster cultural and ethical change in the workplace.
HOT TOPIC WORKSHOP: MANAGING DATA SECURITY

Cybersecurity and data integrity requirements such as CUI and NIST 800-171 are the new normal in the world of research data. The aim of this workshop is to bring together the affected parties - faculty, contract and grant administration and IT professionals - for a discussion on how to efficiently facilitate research with these new priorities and requirements. This workshop will provide a regulatory overview, a discussion on creating awareness, getting buy-in, policy issues and approaches to IT security architecture. Participants will hear from a faculty panel regarding their experiences.
